East Asia Explorer

The East Asia Explorer tracks evolving geopolitical trends, emerging security challenges, and progress towards regional integration in East Asia. It focuses on the ASEAN grouping, domestic and foreign policy developments in countries of East Asia and Oceania, great power contestation in the region, and India’s relations with ASEAN and its member countries.

In this issue, Anshita Shukla provides an analysis of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and related meetings held in Vientiane, Laos, from July 25- 27, 2024. She covers the outcomes of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the 31st ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the 14th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with India. She highlights the remarks made by Dr. S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, as well as the perspectives of the foreign ministers on regional and international issues, as reflected in the Joint Communique.

Jayantika Rao reviews External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s interactions with Southeast and East Asian counterparts. She assesses the outcomes against the backdrop of India’s ‘Act East’ policy.

Dr. Pradeep Taneja examines the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ meeting in Nuku’alofa, Tonga from August 26- 30, 2024, focussing on the geopolitical tensions surrounding the involvement of China and Taiwan in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). The article highlights China’s growing influence in the Pacific region and its diplomatic struggle with Taiwan, which continues to provide substantial aid to the Pacific islands, as well as the adoption of the Australian-funded Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI) to counter China’s growing security relationships with the Pacific nations.

Jayantika Rao examines the aftermath of Thailand's ‘big shock,’ which followed the ousting of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court. With the country once again plunged into political uncertainty, she looks into the potential implications of newcomer Paethongtarn Shinawatra assuming the role of Prime Minister, and the broader impact of a Shinawatra regaining office in Thailand.

In her second piece, Anshita Shukla reviews the first official visit of the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, to New Delhi, India from July 30- August 1, 2024. She analyses the outcomes of the visit and underscores the leading elements of contemporary bilateral relations between India and Vietnam.

Amb. Biren Nanda analyses the outcomes of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s state visit to India from August 20-23, 2024. He also reviews bilateral ties between Malaysia and India, which were upgraded to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ during PM Anwar’s visit.
